The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regional Forum, held on March 13 and 14, 2024, served as a significant platform for showcasing Russian expertise in the area of sustainable development. This year’s Regional Forum took place amidst numerous challenges. In line with the commitment to the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), governments and stakeholders throughout the UNECE region have been focusing on devising effective, innovative, and resilient strategies and solutions aimed at accelerating the implementation of these goals.
This year’s theme for the Regional Forum was “Strengthening the 2030 Agenda in the UNECE Economic Commission Region in the Face of Multiple Challenges: Implementing Sustainable, Sustainable and Innovative Solutions.”
The experts from the Center, as well as their colleagues from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), participated in a roundtable discussion on achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16): promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all, and creating effective and accountable institutions at all levels. The purpose of the roundtable was to identify and strengthen the foundations for democratic and social sustainability. Participants discussed ways to overcome critical points that could lead to fragile imbalances and potential conflict risks, while also generating innovative ideas that could contribute to moving the region towards more peaceful, democratic, digitally-enabled, and people-centered societies. Experts and colleagues from the Center who have successfully built cooperation in times of deep crisis shared their experiences with the forum attendees, discussing principles and approaches for establishing long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships in the region.
