The Centre has been conducting regular research since 2020 aimed at investigating methods of developing critical thinking in children and creating tools to assess the level of this skill development. Critical thinking refers to the ability to analyze information, evaluate its credibility and relevance, ask questions, and form one’s own conclusions. It is an essential part of a child’s growth and plays a significant role in their future success and self-fulfillment. Recent data indicate that parents play a crucial role in the development of children’s critical thinking.
Parents and caregivers are key figures who can significantly influence the formation of children’s critical thinking skills. They create an environment that fosters critical thinking and provide children with tasks that stimulate their thinking processes.
One of the fundamental aspects of fostering critical thinking is the capacity to analyze and assess information. Simultaneously, parents and caretakers can assist children in developing critical thinking abilities by providing them with a diverse range of information sources. For instance, they can engage their children in watching cartoons, discussing their content, and asking questions to check their level of comprehension and ability to analyze.
Additionally, critical thinking development also requires the ability to ask questions and make their own conclusions. Parents and caretakers can assist children in developing these skills by asking stimulating questions and encouraging independent thought. For instance, after reading a book or viewing a film, parents can discuss their child’s reactions and encourage them to express their opinions. It is also essential to teach children how to critically reflect on themselves and their actions in order to recognize their errors and learn from them. Furthermore, parents and caretakers should formulate and develop children’s ability to present arguments.
The ability to express thoughts and argue a position will enable children to achieve academic and personal success. Parents can engage in discussions with children on topics that interest them, providing solutions and arguing their conclusions. It is important, however, for adults to respect the child’s opinion and consider it, even if it differs from their own. Parents and caregivers also play a significant role in fostering a disciplined and systematic approach to developing critical thinking. Children should be taught to be purposeful, persistent, and patient in their learning, as well as given the opportunity to think independently and find solutions to problems.
In conclusion, parents and caregivers have a significant role in development of critical thinking in children. Through creating an environment that encourages analytical, critical, and independent thought processes, they lay the groundwork for future success. By providing children with the necessary tools and guiding them towards effective problem-solving strategies, parents and caregivers contribute to the development of creative and independent thinkers.
