We would like to introduce you to two tools for evaluating and monitoring the development of 4 key competencies (communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration) – a criteria-based assessment rubric and an observation form. These tools provide efficient teacher-student feedback and are described in the book “4K Competencies: Development and Assessment in the Classroom.” Let us quote an important passage from this publication that explains the fundamental approach to such assessment – developing criteria and observing students during their activities.
“Due to the fact that we cannot directly measure critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, we need to use tools that can capture the manifestations or indicators of these abilities. However, there are currently few such tools available. Traditional assessment methods, such as multiple-choice tests and closed-ended questionnaires, are effective for measuring knowledge, but not for assessing more complex skills…
One potential source for the necessary assessment tools is “authentic” assessment, which involves observing how students cope with real-life tasks. Their performance in these situations can serve as indicators for measuring their skills.
Indicators can take the form of behaviors, products, or achievements. To conduct such assessments, it is essential to create environments that allow the skills or competencies to be demonstrated, such as tasks that reflect real-life scenarios where these skills are used.”
