On October 9, 2023, UNESCO unveiled a comprehensive report on the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
At the 78th session of the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly (Economic and Financial Committee), representatives of member states and the UN system came together to explore pathways towards achieving sustainable development. Their discussions spanned a wide array of crucial topics, from the implementation of international commitments regarding climate change to agreements on financing for development. Additionally, they delved into efforts dedicated to advancing education for sustainable development on a global scale.
As part of the discussion, Mr. Eliot Minchenberg, Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office in New York and Representative of the United Nations, presented the comprehensive “Report on the Implementation of Education for Sustainable Development within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” This report was presented in accordance with General Assembly resolution 76/209 and serves as a thorough assessment of the progress made in implementing education for sustainable development within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
To enhance the implementation at the country level and facilitate funding for environmentally-focused education initiatives, a UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) is currently in development, leveraging the potential of education to address climate change adaptation, mitigation, and sustainable development in response to global challenges.
